One of the most ambitious and personally meaningful projects I have led to date was the Building Upliftment Project for Friends Day Centre — a special needs school and support centre for children and adults with disabilities in Cape Town.
What began as a deeply personal initiative, inspired by my son’s experience at the centre, quickly grew into a large-scale transformation project that brought together every aspect of my creative and strategic background. This was the first project where I truly used the full spectrum of my skills — combining graphic design, branding, marketing, spatial planning, interior design, community engagement, fundraising, sponsor outreach, and project management into one unified vision.
But more than a renovation project, this became a labour of love...
I developed a complete design system and corporate identity for the initiative, creating a cohesive visual language used across fundraising campaigns, donor presentations, social media, merchandise, and digital communications. I proposed and planned the full scope of upgrades required throughout the facility, re-designed classroom layouts to improve accessibility and functionality, and helped shape environments that felt warmer, brighter, and more empowering for both learners and staff.
As the project evolved, so did my role. I stepped into entirely new territories — coordinating suppliers and contractors, reaching out to sponsors and donors, supervising renovations on site, managing timelines and budgets, and bringing together a community of people willing to contribute their time, skills, and resources toward a shared purpose.
From concept through to implementation, I project managed the upliftment project from start to finish. The experience fundamentally changed the way I see design: not simply as something visual, but as a powerful tool for connection, storytelling, and meaningful social impact.
Above all, this project would never have been possible without the generosity, trust, and collective effort of an incredible community of people. From sponsors, donors, and suppliers, to volunteers, friends, families, contractors, educators, and every person who offered their time, skills, encouragement, or support — thank you for believing in the vision and helping bring it to life. What was achieved at Friends Day Centre was not the work of one person, but the result of many hearts coming together with a shared desire to create something better for the children, adults, and staff who call this place home. I am endlessly grateful to everyone who walked this journey with us and helped transform not only the physical spaces, but the spirit of the centre itself.
